$8,300 Raised, 90 Games Played: Simcoe Warriors Tournament Delivers an Unforgettable Weekend

March 26, 20263 min read

Some weekends are about hockey.

Others are about something much bigger.

This past weekend in Simcoe, it was both.

The Simcoe Warriors Tournament for Breast Cancer brought together 50 teams from across Ontario, filling the arenas in Talbot and Waterford with over 90 games, countless moments, and a level of community support that will be remembered long after the final buzzer.

Tournament Director Vanessa Taylor said the weekend exceeded expectations in every way.

“This past weekend we hosted our 50 teams and watched over 90 exciting games,” she said. “With intense shootouts and lots of competitive hockey, there was no lack of excitement.”

From early morning puck drops to late night finishes, the days were long. But for everyone involved, they were worth it.

“Our days were long, but completely worth it,” Taylor said.

What stood out most wasn’t just the hockey. It was the way the community came together when it mattered.

Over the four day tournament, the level of support from teams, families, volunteers, and local businesses was impossible to miss.

“The amount of support we saw over the four days was astonishing,” Taylor said.

That support was tested in a moment that could have slowed everything down.

Between Friday and Saturday, the arena’s Zamboni broke down twice. For a tournament of this size, it could have caused major delays.

Instead, it became one of the most memorable moments of the weekend.

Norfolk County arena staff acted quickly, bringing in a replacement Zamboni from another facility. At the same time, players, coaches, and officials stepped in to keep things moving.

“Two teams, Simcoe U15-1 and U15 Aylmer Flames, along with bench staff and refs were quick to jump in and shovel the ice so we could continue with the tournament,” Taylor said. “We couldn’t be more proud and thankful for those teams, refs, and arena crew.”

It was a moment that captured exactly what the tournament is all about.

Not just competition. Community.

That same feeling carried through the entire weekend.

Teams and families made a point to stop by the registration desk, not just to check in, but to share their appreciation.

“Coaches, families and parents made a point to pop by and give praise on how wonderful the tournament has been,” Taylor said. “We’ve even had some requesting first dibs and early registration spots for next season.”

Off the ice, the impact was just as strong.

The tournament hosted its largest raffle to date, with overwhelming support from sponsors, local businesses, families, and teams. By the end of the weekend, the results spoke for themselves.

“Our unofficial funds raised was over $8,300,” Taylor said.

For Taylor and the organizing committee, that’s what makes all the work worth it.

“Overall the weekend was incredible,” she said. “Games were played, fun was had and funds were raised for an amazing cause.”

Events like this don’t happen without a long list of people behind the scenes, and Taylor made sure to recognize them all.

From the organizing committee to the vendors, food trucks, Gator BBQ for hosting breakfast, volunteers running music and raffles, referees, timekeepers, schedulers, arena staff, teams, families, and sponsors, every piece mattered.

“Without all of you, this couldn’t have happened.”

And while the 2026 tournament may be over, the momentum is already building.

“We’re looking forward to next year,” Taylor said. “Only 357 days until the next Breast Cancer Tournament.”

In a town that lives and breathes hockey, this weekend was a reminder of what the game can do when it brings people together.

Ninety games.

Fifty teams.

One community.

And a cause that continues to matter.

“We’ll see you at the rink.”
