Meet Maggie Gibson. She is 17, from Townsend, and she plays utility for the Haldimand Heat U17 Tier 1. Maggie has been swinging a bat for nine years, ever since her mom Cathy signed her up at age eight, and what started as trying something new turned into the thing that shapes her days. She has medaled at the Canadian Championships and grown into the kind of teammate everyone wants in their corner. Here is her story, in her own words.

Her Story

Maggie was eight years old when her mom, Cathy Gibson, first signed her up for softball. What started as trying something new quickly turned into a passion. Nine years later, the game has taught her about hard work, teamwork, and perseverance, and given her memories and friendships she would not trade.

Her proudest moment came in her second year of U15. The team worked hard all season and grew close, and that work earned them a spot at the Canadian Championships. Getting there was not easy. They had to overcome challenges, stay focused, and give their best every time they stepped on the field. Once they arrived, they kept grinding against some of the best teams in the country and finished third. Maggie will never forget it, but she is even prouder of how the team grew together and proved what they could do when they pulled in the same direction.

The person who shaped her most is her head coach, Greg Courneyea. He pushes her to be her best, supports her when things get hard, and never lets her give up. He celebrates her wins and keeps her working toward the next goal. Through his guidance, Maggie says she has become a stronger athlete, a better teammate, and a more confident person. The lessons about dedication, discipline, and believing in herself are ones she plans to carry for life.

What's Next

On the field, Maggie wants to keep her team motivated and lead by example with hard work and a positive attitude. She believes being a great teammate matters just as much as being a great player. For herself, she is focused on becoming more consistent, keeping the ball low at the plate, hitting hard line drives and ground balls, and making smart, confident plays on defense.

Off the field, Maggie wants to become an HVAC technician. She likes work that is hands on and full of problems to solve, and she enjoys learning how things work. It suits her perfectly.

Who She's Thanking

Maggie's first thank you goes to her mom, Cathy Gibson, who has spent countless hours driving her to practices, early games, tournaments, and long trips to the United States. No matter how busy life gets, Cathy makes the sacrifices so Maggie can chase what she loves. Maggie also thanks her coaches, Greg Courneyea, Paul Taylor, and Steve Myers, for believing in her, pushing her, and teaching her about hard work, teamwork, and leadership. Without their support, she says, none of it would have been possible.
