Norfolk Hericanes U13B Turn a Season of Perseverance Into a Provincial Dream
Every season has a team that reminds everyone what youth sports are truly about. Not just wins and losses, but resilience, growth and belief.
This year, the Norfolk Hericanes U13B girls hockey team has become that team.
Their season did not begin the way they hoped. Facing several strong opponents early in the schedule, the Hericanes battled through a difficult first half and entered the Christmas break with just two wins. For many teams, a start like that can shake confidence.
For this group, it became motivation.
Instead of getting discouraged, the players continued to show up to practices with energy and determination. They listened to their coaches, supported each other and kept putting in the work. Game by game, the team improved.
According to those close to the group, the defining quality of this team has been their grit. Even when the scoreboard was not in their favour, the players never stopped competing.
They simply kept working.
The Turning Point in Woodstock
The moment things truly began to change came during a tournament in Woodstock in January.
Throughout the weekend, something started clicking for the Hericanes. The puck movement was cleaner, the defensive play stronger and the confidence noticeably growing. The team battled their way all the way to the semifinals before falling in a close game.
But the result of that final game was not the story of the weekend.
What mattered was the momentum it created. From that point forward, the Hericanes looked like a completely different team.
The belief was there. The chemistry was there. And the wins started to follow.

The Game That Sent Them to Provincials
Every great season has one defining moment. For the Hericanes, that moment came in playdowns against Haldimand.
The players knew exactly what was at stake. A win would send them to provincials.
When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read 3-1 in favour of the Hericanes.
The celebration that followed was the result of months of perseverance and determination. The same team that had struggled early in the season had now earned a spot at provincials.
A Team Effort From Top to Bottom
The success of the Hericanes has been built on a true team effort. Contributions have come from every player in the lineup, with scoring, defense and goaltending all playing key roles throughout the season.
However, one player’s development has been especially exciting to watch.
Defender Addi Brown scored her first goal late in the season, and since that moment she has been playing with incredible confidence. Her growth on the ice has been noticeable, and her teammates have been right there celebrating every step of the journey.
It is exactly the kind of breakthrough moment that makes youth sports special.
A Locker Room Full of Energy
If you step into the Hericanes dressing room, one thing becomes clear immediately. This group genuinely enjoys being together.
The room is loud, chaotic and full of laughter. The players have different personalities but have formed a bond that has carried them through the ups and downs of the season.
Every player on the team has improved over the course of the year, and watching that growth has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey for the coaches and families involved.
The Provincial Stage Awaits
Now the Hericanes prepare for one final away tournament experience as they head to provincials.
The message for the players is simple. Believe that you belong. If they continue to play with the same determination, teamwork and confidence that got them here, they are more than capable of competing with anyone.
And of course, there is one more thing the team is excited about.
The coveted provincials hoodies.
From a challenging start to a season ending opportunity on the provincial stage, the Norfolk Hericanes U13B have already proven something powerful.
Hard work and belief can change everything.
