Delhi’s Avyree Sherman Wins Canada Games Silver, Continues Softball Journey with NCAA’s Canisius Golden Griffins

When Avyree Sherman of Delhi took the field at the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland, she added yet another highlight to an already impressive resume. Playing both first base and outfield for Team Ontario, Sherman helped her team earn a silver medal at the national multi-sport showcase.

Sherman, 19, contributed at the plate with a solid .316 batting average throughout the tournament, providing consistency in Ontario’s lineup. For her, the medal wasn’t just another achievement — it was the continuation of a journey that started in Delhi with the Delhi Tigers baseball association, before switching to softball where her career really began to take flight.

Her years with the D1 Nationals program proved pivotal. With that team, Sherman collected a long list of accomplishments, including an Ontario Summer Games championship, a provincial championship, and a silver medal at the 2023 National Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Those experiences prepared her for the next level, where she quickly earned a place among Canada’s top young athletes.

In 2023, Sherman was selected to the U18 Team Canada women’s softball team, competing at the WBSC U18 Women’s Softball World Cup in Dallas, Texas. There, Canada earned the silver medal, placing second against the best in the world. Representing her country on the international stage and standing on the podium at a world championship is an accomplishment few athletes can claim — and Sherman did it before the age of 19.

Now, Sherman’s journey is taking her across the border. She has committed to continue her softball career with the Canisius Golden Griffins, an NCAA Division I program based in Buffalo, New York. Competing at the highest level of collegiate softball in the United States is the next challenge, and one she has earned through years of hard work, determination, and a love of the game.

Behind all the medals and statistics is a story that resonates with her hometown of Delhi and the broader Norfolk County community. Sherman’s path shows what’s possible for local athletes who start on small-town diamonds but set their goals high. From learning the game with the Tigers, to winning national and provincial titles, to representing Canada internationally, she has never forgotten her roots while climbing to the top of her sport.

As Sherman prepares to don the Canisius blue and gold, she carries with her the pride of her hometown and the legacy of success she has already built. Whether it’s on the national stage with Team Ontario, representing Canada at the World Cup, or now stepping into the NCAA spotlight, Avyree Sherman continues to inspire the next generation of Norfolk athletes who dream of playing at the highest levels.
