The Credit Card Statement Says $24,000. Here Is How One Hockey Family Got $587 Back This Month
The credit card statement landed in your inbox at 10 p.m., after the kids were finally in bed. You opened it, saw the total, and closed it again. Tomorrow is another early practice, and the tournament fees are due on Friday.
We get it. We are at the same rinks. We have stood in the same lobby, holding the same coffee, doing the same quiet math. And here is the part I want you to hear first. In the example below, one hockey family got about $587 a month back in their budget. Not someday. Starting with the first payment after their refinance.
What was really going on
This family has two kids in hockey. They owe about $380,000 on a house that is worth around $600,000. They also carry $24,000 on credit cards at about 21 percent. That is roughly $420 a month in interest alone, and the minimum payments run about $720 a month. They are not careless people. A few tournaments, a new set of goalie pads, a furnace repair, and the cards quietly filled up.
Most families think the problem is the spending. In my experience, the problem is usually where the debt is sitting. The same $24,000 costs about 21 percent on a card and about 4.5 percent inside a mortgage (an example rate, yours will differ). Same debt, very different price tag.
The real numbers
We refinanced the mortgage from $380,000 to $404,000 and paid off the cards. Over 25 years at an example rate of 4.5 percent, the mortgage payment goes from about $2,112 to about $2,246. That is about $133 more on the mortgage.
But the $720 a month in card payments is gone. $720 minus about $133 is about $587 back in their pocket every month. That is a tournament weekend, covered. That is new skates in January without a sigh. And the cards finally stop climbing.
I will be straight with you about the trade-off, because you deserve the full picture. If you let that $24,000 sit inside a 25 year mortgage and only make the regular payment, you can pay more total interest than if you had crushed the cards in two years. Refinancing also has costs, like legal fees and possibly an appraisal, and you have to qualify. This family decided the breathing room today mattered more, and we also set up a small extra payment so the debt does not hang around forever.
Why this is not about the mortgage
I coached my own kids for years, and I never wanted to say no to a season. We never want you to say no to your kids and their sports either. That is the whole point of what I do.
Once your debt is in the right place, I introduce you to my partners who help you keep growing and protecting what you have built. Think financial counsellors, insurance, and people who help you build a rainy day fund so the cards do not creep back. I do not do this once and disappear. This is the start of a relationship. I want to be your coach for the long haul, at the same rinks, for years.
If your numbers do not make sense for this, I will tell you. If waiting is smarter, I will tell you that too.
