From Haldimand Heat to NCAA Division 1: Ella Cournyea Earns Her Shot
For athletes from small towns, big dreams can sometimes feel far away.
Then someone like Ella Cournyea comes along and reminds every young player in Haldimand and Norfolk that those dreams are real.
The Haldimand Heat 09 standout has committed to play NCAA Division 1 softball at the University of Detroit Mercy, turning years of work, sacrifice, and belief into one of the biggest milestones of her young career.
For Cournyea, the moment was hard to put into words.
“Committing to Detroit Mercy was honestly a surreal moment for me,” she said. “It felt like all the years of hard work, early mornings, and sacrifices had finally paid off.”
There was pride in the moment, but also perspective.

“I was proud, but also really grateful because I know I didn’t get there alone. Playing Division 1 softball has always been my goal, so making it a reality was an incredible feeling.”
And like so many athletes who reach the next level, the commitment did not feel like the finish line. It felt like the beginning of something even bigger.
“At the same time, it motivated me even more because I know I’ve only scratched the surface of what I can do.”
That mindset is part of what made Detroit Mercy the right fit.
What stood out most to Cournyea was the culture she felt the moment she stepped into the program.
“The coaches and players made me feel valued not just as a player, but as a person,” she said. “They made it clear that they expect a high standard every day, which really stood out to me.”
For a player who wants to be challenged, that mattered.
“I’m someone who wants to compete and be pushed,” she said. “I could see right away that this program would help me grow both athletically and academically. From the moment I stepped into the program, I knew it was where I belonged.”
Long before the campus visits and Division 1 opportunities, Cournyea’s game was being built much closer to home.

Her time with the Haldimand Heat and Northern Force played a major role in shaping who she is today. Those teams did not just give her innings and reps. They gave her pressure, competition, and experiences that helped prepare her for the next level.
“The competition we faced and the experiences we had, like competing and medaling at the national level, really pushed me to elevate my game,” she said.
Even earlier in her softball journey, the foundation was already being laid.
“Learning the fundamentals and developing a love for the game were so important,” she said. “There were definitely challenging moments, but those are the ones that helped me grow, taught me how to thrive under pressure, and stay focused in big moments.”
Every athlete who reaches this level has people behind the scenes who helped make it possible, and Cournyea was quick to name the people who helped shape her path.
“My dad has been one of the biggest influences in my journey,” she said. “Being coached by him has shaped my mindset and work ethic more than anything.”
That influence has stayed with her through every stage of her development.
“He’s always pushed me to keep grinding, even when things get tough, and never let me settle for less than what I’m capable of. That’s something that has stayed with me and continues to drive me every day.”
She also pointed to Coach Courtney Gilbert as someone who made a major impact, not just on her physical development, but on the mental side of the game too.
“She was always there for me and really helped me grow not just physically, but mentally,” Cournyea said. “She made me stronger as a player and her attention to detail really took my performance to the next level.”
And then there are the teammates.
The ones who raise the standard in practice, in games, and in the everyday work no one sees.
“Competing alongside strong, dedicated players pushed me to elevate my game and hold myself to a higher standard,” she said. “Being in that kind of environment taught me what it really takes to compete at the next level.”
That understanding of what it takes is part of what Cournyea now hopes to bring to Detroit Mercy.
She takes pride in more than talent.
She takes pride in consistency.
“I’m most proud of my work ethic and my ability to stay composed in high pressure situations,” she said. “I take pride in being a consistent and reliable teammate, someone my team can count on.”
That is the kind of player every program wants more of, and the kind of player small town communities love to rally around.
Cournyea says she is excited to bring her competitiveness, energy, and willingness to keep learning to the next level.
“I know the level will be higher, but I’m ready to compete, challenge myself, and continue growing my game.”
And for the young athletes in Haldimand and Norfolk who are watching closely, dreaming about their own future in the sport, she has a message that feels as grounded as it is powerful.
“Stay consistent, trust the process, and enjoy every moment,” she said. “There will be ups and downs, but what matters is how you respond to them.”
It is advice built from experience. From the hard days, the long drives, the missed opportunities, the growth, and the perseverance it takes to keep going.
“Put in the work, surround yourself with people who support and push you, and never be afraid to put yourself out there,” she said. “Believe in yourself and your goals, because if you’re willing to put in the work when no one is watching, the results will show when everyone is.”
That is what makes this story resonate beyond softball.
It is not just about a commitment.
It is about what a commitment represents.
It represents years of invisible work.
It represents parents and coaches who believed.
It represents teammates who sharpened each other.
It represents a young athlete from this community proving that the next level is possible.
For Ella Cournyea, Detroit Mercy is the next step.
For every young player coming behind her, it is also a reminder.
Big dreams still grow here in Haldimand/Norfolk!
