Fisherville got something special Thursday night — the U15 Haldimand Bulls combined for a no-hitter to edge the Ayr Jr Vics6-5. Around the rest of the counties, the Haldimand Heat U15 took down Guelph, the Caledonia Bears traded haymakers with Pelham in a 14-10 slugfest, and the Simcoe Timberwolves U15 lacrosse squad outlasted NOTL in an eight-goal night.
Game of the Night — Haldimand Bulls 15U vs Ayr Jr Vics
Thursday night at the Fisherville District Lions Community Centre, and the Bulls write a chapter their families will tell for a long time. Ayr jumps out fast, scratching three runs in the top of the 1st and putting the home crowd on their heels.
The Bulls answer with everything they've got in the bottom half —five runsin the first frame. Blake Hartwick punches through with two hits on the night, Wesley Culver matches him, and Pierce Hill and Lucas Laidlaw each drive in runs to flip the scoreboard. The dugout is loud. The crowd is louder. And then the Bulls' arms take over.
Starter Ben Simington works the opening frame without giving up a hit. Blake Van Benthem comes on in long relief and is something else — five innings, zero hits,eleven strikeouts. Brayden Sheppard takes a turn too, and the combined no-hit bid stays alive through every Ayr at-bat.
Top of the 7th. Bulls up by one. Ayr swinging for one more shot. Van Benthem strikes out Evan Sabourin to end it. Three pitchers, zero hits, one for the trophy case.
