Townsends Mylee Walker Turns a Dream Into Reality From Local Diamonds to Bryant & Stratton Softball

March 11, 20265 min read

For Mylee Walker, the moment she committed to play college softball at Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach felt almost unreal.

“When I committed, it honestly felt surreal,” Walker said. “I always dreamed about playing softball at the next level, but actually seeing it happen was exciting.”

That dream didn’t start on a big stage. It started much closer to home.

Like many athletes from Norfolk County, Walker first discovered the game on local diamonds. Her journey began in Port Dover playing in Peter Timphs’ program, where she quickly fell in love with softball.

From there, her development continued with two programs that helped shape both the player and person she has become. The Haldimand Heat 08 and the Waterloo Ghosts.

“Playing for both teams showed me what it’s like to have a tight knit group and having my teammates be my best friends,” Walker said. “I knew I wanted to have that same feeling in the future.”

When she visited Bryant and Stratton, she felt something familiar.

“When I practiced with Bryant and Stratton, their group gave me the same feeling.”

The Bobcats program competes in the NJCAA, a level known for developing athletes who want to push their game while balancing academics. For Walker, the environment stood out immediately.

Community Partner Spotlight

Local sports stories like this one are made possible by community partners who believe in supporting minor sports. Walker Mortgages is the proud sponsor of Hometown Sports Network and a strong supporter of athletes and families across Haldimand and Norfolk County.

At Walker Mortgages we believe success on the field starts with peace of mind at home. That is why our team created the Monthly Payment Reset Program designed to help homeowners review their mortgage and potentially lower their monthly payments.

By freeing up monthly cash flow families can reduce financial stress and focus on what matters most supporting their kids, their passions and their future.

If your mortgage has not been reviewed in the past year it might be time for a reset.

“What stood out most was the competitive environment and how supportive the coaching staff and team are. From the beginning it felt like a place where I could grow both as a player and as a person.”

Like every athlete who reaches the next level, Walker did not get there alone.

She credits several players she looked up to while coming through the local softball community. Athletes who showed her what the next level looked like.

“Players like Jana Want and Chloe Hocquard, along with the athletes on the D1 Nationals team, are people I’ve looked up to,” Walker said. “Seeing their success inspired me and showed me what it takes to compete at the next level.”

And of course her biggest supporters were never far from the field.

“My family has always supported me at games and tournaments, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”

While Walker’s next chapter will take her to Virginia Beach, she has not forgotten where her journey began or the players who are now chasing the same dreams she once had.

Back home in Simcoe, Walker spends time working with younger athletes at Mikey’s RBI Factory helping train the next generation of softball players.

It is a role she takes seriously.

“I remember being younger and wanting to learn everything I could,” Walker said. “Having people I looked up to teach me not just mechanics but also how to have fun meant a lot.”

Now the roles have reversed.

“Being able to help younger players develop their skills and confidence is really rewarding. I love seeing them improve and start to believe in themselves. It reminds me why I fell in love with the game.”

When she works with young athletes, Walker tries to teach more than just softball mechanics.

“One of the biggest things I try to teach them is that hard work and consistency matter more than anything. Softball is a game where failure happens a lot, so learning how to stay positive and keep working is really important.”

She also reminds them of something many young athletes forget.

“Enjoy the process and have fun while you are getting better.”

As Walker prepares for the next step in her career, she knows the work is not done.

“I’m really excited to bring my competitiveness and work ethic to the Bryant and Stratton program,” she said. “I’m always a supportive teammate and try to bring positive energy to the field.”

She is also eager to continue developing her game and contribute wherever the team needs her.

“Being able to compete at the college level is something I’ve worked toward for a long time.”

And if a young player from Norfolk County happens to read her story and dream about following the same path, Walker has a simple message.

“Believe in yourself and keep working even when things get tough,” she said. “Surround yourself with people who support you and push you to be better. If you stay dedicated and passionate about the game, opportunities can come from places you might not expect.”

From Port Dover diamonds to college softball in Virginia Beach, Mylee Walker’s journey is another reminder that big dreams often start in small towns.
