Two Kids From Haldimand County Just Won a National Championship Berth. The Story Starts in Fisherville and Townsend.
Dale Schweyer grew up in Fisherville playing for the Haldimand Heat. Mikey Walker is from Townsend and cut his teeth with the Simcoe Braves.
This past weekend they stood together in Tavistock as national champions in waiting.
The two Haldimand County natives were part of the Toronto Jr Batmen squad that went a perfect 5-0 at the U23 Junior Eliminations, earning their spot at the Softball Canada National Championship in Saskatoon at the end of the summer. Along the way Dale took home the tournament's top pitcher award and Mikey was a dangerous bat in the lineup all weekend long.
This is a local story. And it is a big one.

A Weekend to Remember
The Jr Batmen were locked in from the very first pitch.
Dale took the ball in game one and delivered a commanding 6-1 victory over the New Hamburg Mustangs. The tone was set immediately. This was a team ready to compete at the highest level.
The Batmen rolled through round robin play and into the championship final against the Tavistock Merchants without dropping a game. Every time the team needed a big moment someone stepped up and delivered.
Behind the plate for every start was Mikey Walker. Two kids who grew up in the same county, now forming one of the most productive batteries in the tournament.
When It Mattered Most
The final against Tavistock was the kind of game that defines a tournament run.
Dale took the ball again in the championship game and delivered when it counted most, picking up the win in an 8-5 victory that sealed the title and booked the Batmen's trip to Nationals.
Five games. Five wins. A national berth earned.
Dale reflected on what made the weekend work.
"Our group came together this weekend and really came alive at the plate. That will be the key at nationals for sure, whoever is hot at the plate is who will win."
For a program only in its second year of existence, that kind of championship mentality speaks volumes about what is being built with the Toronto Jr Batmen.
The Battery That Powered It All
While this was a complete team effort, the connection between Dale and Mikey was at the heart of everything the Batmen did on the mound this weekend.
Dale started and won two games including a no Hitter against the Fingal Juniors, he cam ein relief in the championship final, surrendering just 3 runs across the entire tournament while earning the top pitcher award. Mikey was behind the plate for every one of those starts, calling the game and anchoring the defence from the very first pitch to the last.
On offence Mikey was just as valuable. He batted .600 on the weekend, drove in four runs, and drew five walks. When you are getting on base at that rate you are changing the game every time you step into the box.
Mikey saw it up close all weekend and put it simply.
"Dale is throwing the best he ever has right now."
Two kids who grew up playing ball in Haldimand County. One from the Haldimand Heat program. One from the Simcoe Braves. Now forming one of the most dangerous batteries in the country at the U23 level.
That does not happen by accident. It happens because of years of development, great coaching, and a genuine love for the game that started right here in this community.
What Comes Next
The Jr Batmen are not done. Not even close.
They have tournaments this weekend in Kitchener and the following weekend in Saugeen before the season builds toward two massive moments.
First, the ISC Worlds hosted right here in Ontario at Bear Creek in Delaware. That is barely an hour from Haldimand and Norfolk Counties and it is going to feature some of the best fastball in the world. If you have never watched elite fastball up close this is your chance to do it without going far from home. Make the drive. You will not regret it.
Then comes Saskatoon at the end of the summer where the Jr Batmen will chase a national title and look to defend the championship their program earned last year.
Dale Schweyer and Mikey Walker will be right in the middle of it.
The Haldimand Heat and the Simcoe Braves helped build these two athletes. Now they are representing this county on one of the biggest stages in amateur fastball.
Haldimand and Norfolk, keep your eyes on these two all summer long.
