Norfolk Hericanes U11 Capture FallFest Championship in Kitchener
Team effort, standout goaltending, and resilience define championship run
The Norfolk Hericanes U11 squad delivered a weekend to remember at the Kitchener Rangers FallFest Tournament, combining skill, teamwork, and pure determination to take home the championship title.
From the opening puck drop, this was a team with purpose. The Hericanes opened with a hard-fought 2–1 win over Owen Sound, powered by goals from Ellie Vandendriessche and Ellie Simoes, while goaltender Ophelia Simoes turned aside key chances to secure the victory.
Game 2 saw the Hericanes find another gear, dominating Ancaster 8–0 behind a three-goal performance from Liv Smith and additional tallies from Haylee Stewart, Ellie Simoes (2), Andi Lauszus, and Brinkley Erdelac. Kailyn Simpson posted the shutout in net as Norfolk’s offense overwhelmed their opponents.
Momentum carried into Game 3, a 4–1 win over Haldimand. Ellie Simoes’ natural hat trick and an Erin Pope goal highlighted another balanced performance, with Ophelia Simoes once again steady between the pipes.

The only setback came in Game 4, a 3–0 loss to Woodstock, a team that had yet to allow a goal all tournament. Rather than discourage the group, it galvanized them. Coaches later said that Saturday night became a turning point — the team refocused on puck movement, communication, and patience with the puck.
That renewed energy showed in the semifinal rematch with Flamborough, a thriller that ended 4–3. The game turned into a duel of hat tricks between Simoes and Flamborough’s top scorer, until, with just 45 seconds left, Ellie Simoes slid a perfect pass to Haylee Stewart, who buried the game-winner to send Norfolk to the final. Ophelia Simoes’ timely saves ensured the lead held.
Championship Poise
The stage was set for a rematch with Woodstock, the same team that had blanked Norfolk earlier. This time, the Hericanes flipped the script. Backed by exceptional goaltending from Kailyn Simpson — who was named MVP of the championship by the Kitchener tournament organizers — the Hericanes played a near-flawless game. Goals from Andi Lauszus, Haylee Stewart, and Ellie Simoes sealed a 3–0 victory and the tournament crown.
A True Team Triumph
What stood out most over the weekend wasn’t one player’s stats — it was the group’s unity. Every skater contributed, whether blocking shots, setting up plays, or cheering from the bench. Coaches praised their composure and commitment to team hockey, particularly after facing early adversity.
It was a fitting finish for a team that defines what small-town hockey is all about — heart, teamwork, and pride in the crest on the front of the jersey.
