Norfolk Hericanes U11B Turn Dominance Into a Provincial Opportunity

March 17, 20264 min read

Some teams build success over time. Others come together and find something special almost instantly.

The Norfolk Hericanes U11B girls hockey team has done both.

In a season that has been defined by consistency, growth and belief, the Hericanes have officially punched their ticket to provincials, and they have done it in impressive fashion.

A Season of Results

From the start of the regular season, the Hericanes set the tone.

They finished first in their division with a remarkable 18-0-2 record, proving week after week that they were one of the top teams in the region.

That success carried into tournament play. The team captured a championship in Kitchener in November and added a second place finish in Orillia earlier in the season.

When it came time for provincial playdowns, the Hericanes continued to rise to the moment. They went 5-0-5 and finished first in their group, securing their place at provincials.

The job is not done yet. The team is currently in round three of playoffs, competing against Waterloo and Oakville. After strong performances against Oakville, the Hericanes are in position to continue their run, with the top team advancing to a championship game on March 28 against either North Bay or Ennismore.

A Team That Grew Together

When asked about the biggest reason for the team’s success this season, the answer came back to one word. Team.

The players have developed strong chemistry, learning to trust one another and move the puck more effectively. That growth has led to balanced scoring throughout the lineup and a style of play that is difficult to defend.

Leadership has also played a major role. In tight games, the team’s leaders have stepped up in key moments, whether it is making a defensive play to protect a lead or contributing offensively when it matters most.

Defining Moments Under Pressure

Every season has moments that shape a team’s identity. For the Hericanes, that moment came in round one against Burlington.

After dropping game two in a hard fought 3-2 contest in a loud and intense environment, the team was faced with a challenge.

Game three brought the same energy, the same pressure and the same noise.

This time, the Hericanes were ready.

They responded with a 1-0 victory in a tightly contested battle, showing composure, resilience and the ability to rise in big moments.

It was a turning point that defined who this team has become.

Key Contributors Stepping Up

While the Hericanes have been built on team play, several players have stepped up in key moments.

Goaltender Kaylin Simpson has been outstanding down the stretch, delivering strong performances and giving the team confidence in critical situations.

Up front, Ellie Simoes and Haylee Stewart have been major contributors offensively. Of the team’s 25 goals during playdowns, the two have combined for more than half, providing timely scoring when the team has needed it most.

What It Will Take at Provincials

As the Hericanes continue their playoff run and prepare for provincials, the focus remains on playing their game.

That means strong team play, moving the puck effectively and maintaining a relentless forecheck and backcheck. When the team is working together in all areas of the ice, they are at their best.

A Group Built on Friendship

What truly sets this team apart goes beyond the scoreboard.

Many of the players came from different backgrounds, with only a small group having played together previously and several joining from boys hockey.

Despite that, the team came together quickly, building strong friendships and a positive team culture.

That connection shows up in every game. It shows up on the bench, in the locker room and in the way the players support one another on the ice.

A Season to Remember

From an undefeated regular season to a provincial berth, the Norfolk Hericanes U11B have created something special this year.

They have proven that when a team comes together, commits to each other and embraces the moment, anything is possible.

And as they continue their journey through playoffs and into provincials, one thing is clear.

This team is just getting started.
