Bruised Credit? One Move This Month Could Be Worth $509 A Month On Your Mortgage.

September 23, 20261 min read

You checked your credit score on your phone in the arena lobby, somewhere between warm up and puck drop. The number made your stomach drop faster than the puck. And that little voice said it. We will never get approved for anything good.

We get it. Bruised credit does not make you a bad person. It usually means you had a tough stretch. A layoff, a separation, a year where the cards carried the family. That happens to good people all the time.

The quick tip

Your score cares a lot about how full your cards are. A card sitting at $4,800 on a $5,000 limit is 96 percent used, and that weighs on your score more than most people realize. Get that balance under $1,500, below 30 percent, and keep every payment on time. Scores often start responding within a billing cycle or two.

Why it matters in dollars. On a $400,000 mortgage, the gap between a 6.49 percent alternative lender rate and a 4.29 percent bank rate is about $509 a month. Same house. Same family. Different file.

Coaching my own kids taught me nobody gets better by being yelled at. They get better with a plan. I am the rebuilder here, not the gatekeeper, and I work with partners, credit rebuilders and financial counsellors, who walk alongside families while we get them back to bank rates. Then we stay together for the long run.
