Hockey bags and skates by the back door of a family kitchen on an early autumn morning

The $835 a Month Hiding in Your Credit Card Statement

October 20, 2026•2 min read

The credit card statement landed this morning, and you opened it standing at the kitchen counter while your coffee went cold. Hockey fees, the tournament hotel, the skates that lasted one season. The balance is bigger than last month again. You close the app and tell yourself you will sort it out after the playoffs.

We get it. We are at the same rinks. Early mornings, cold arenas, a hot chocolate in one hand and a credit card in the other. Nobody is judging you here. Here is what I want you to know today. For a lot of sports families, the problem is not the spending. It is where the debt is sitting. Moving it could put about $835 a month back in your pocket. This month, not someday.

What it looks like for one hockey family

A hockey family with two kids in rep owed about $26,000 spread across two credit cards, a line of credit, and a car loan. The cards were charging around 21 percent and the rest were not much kinder. About $980 a month went out the door to cover those payments, and the balances barely moved.

They had built equity in their home over the years, so we looked at rolling all of it into the mortgage at about 4.59 percent. That $26,000 added roughly $145 a month to the mortgage payment. The $980 in separate debt payments went away. The difference is about $835 a month back in their pocket, or around $10,000 a year.

That is the tournament weekend, the stick tape, the gas and the drive-through dinner, covered, every month. That is what we mean when we say we do not want you to say no.

The part I am not going to skip

This is not free money. Spreading that debt over 25 years can cost more interest over time if you do nothing else. There can be fees to refinance, and sometimes a penalty if you break your current mortgage early, so we run those numbers first. Not every family should do it, and I will tell you straight if yours should not.

Most families who do it send part of what they saved back at the mortgage as an extra payment, so the debt actually gets cleared instead of just moved. We map that out together before anything is signed.

This is bigger than one refinance

I coached my own kids for years, and it was the best time of my life. I never wanted to say no to a season. We never want you to say no to your kids and their sports either. Once the debt is in the right place, I introduce you to the partners I work with who help families keep growing and protecting what they have built. I am not here for one refinance. I am here for the next 30 years, and I plan to be at the same rinks you are.
