Hometown Sports Recap — Wednesday, July 8, 2026 — Heat 09 Hold Off Vikings' Late Rally

St. Jean de Brebeuf buzzed Wednesday night as the Haldimand Heat 09 banked 14 hits and held off a five-run Vikings rally to win 10-7 to qualify for Nationals in Calgary. Across Norfolk and Haldimand, the Simcoe Giants 14U dropped a Tier 1 nailbiter by a single run, two more Heat squads rolled at home, and the Simcoe Timberwolves split a busy night on the lacrosse floor.

Game of the Night: Haldimand Heat 09 U17/16U vs Vikings 2010 17U

In a continuation of the PWSA National Qualifiers the The Heat 09s come out swinging at St. Jean de Brebeuf and never really stopped, stacking 14 hits on the night. Ella Courneyea took the ball and goes the distance, a complete seven innings with five strikeouts, exactly the kind of steady outing a summer roster leans on. At the plate, Simmons is the engine, going 2-for-3 and driving in three. Gibson chips in a two-RBI single, and Myers laces two hits including a double. By the middle innings the Heat have built the kind of cushion that lets a dugout breathe.

Then the Vikings 2010s decide to make it a game. Down to their last at-bat, they hang five runs in the top of the 7th, and suddenly that cushion feels awfully thin. Wale and Raso each collect two hits in the frame, and Kapernekas doubles home a pair to pull the visitors within striking distance. But Courneyea and the Heat defense slam the door before the tying run can find its way around the bases.

The win clinches a spot at the U17 National Championship in Calgary next month, hometown sports will have a full breakdown on this game coming soon!

Final: Haldimand Heat 10, Vaughan Vikings 7.
