Game of the Night: Garden City vs. Haldimand River Kings (U11A)

The Haldimand River Kings U11A traveled to Burgoyne on Tuesday night and came home with a 6-4 win over Garden City in a game that gave both benches plenty to talk about.

It started even. Each team found the net once in the opening period, and the two sides skated into the first intermission tied 1-1. The River Kings took control in the middle frame. Haldimand scored three times in the 2nd while Garden City answered once, and the visitors carried a 4-2 lead into the third.

Garden City did not go quietly. The home team scored twice in the final period to keep the pressure on, but the River Kings matched them with two more of their own to protect the cushion. Ten goals in all, and every period had something happening on both ends of the ice.

That is the kind of game that makes a young team feel bigger on the bus ride home. Win the 2nd, answer back in the 3rd, and keep the lead. Not a bad recipe for October.

Final: Haldimand River Kings 6, Garden City 4 (U11A).

Around the Ice

  • Norfolk Knights U18B put the game away early in Tavistock, scoring twice in the 1st and then holding the Jr Braves off the board the rest of the way for a 3-0 shutout.

  • Haldimand River Kings U11B kept NOTL scoreless through two periods at Centennial, then blew the game open with four goals in the 3rd for a 7-2 win.

  • Haldimand River Cats U18B won a tight one at Caledonia Centre, blanking the North Halton Twisters 1-0 for the shutout.

  • Haldimand River Cats U13A dropped a 3-1 decision to the Niagara Rapids at Caledonia Centre.

Coming Up: Hagersville Hawks at Glanbrook Rangers

Tonight at Glanbrook Arena (7:30 p.m.) is a “who blinks first” game. Glanbrook has lost two straight and sits fourth in the Bloomfield Division at 5-4-1, with 40 goals for and 40 against. Hagersville is 3-4-1, sixth, and just lost its last game. Both teams are a little bruised, and one of them gets a lift tonight.

The Hawks have only played 8 games, fewer than anyone in the division, so they’re four points back with games in hand. A win doesn’t fix the standings overnight, but it tells everyone this is a group that isn’t done. Their challenge is the goals-against column 42 in 8 games, so tonight is a test of whether they can tighten up.

Glanbrook’s offence runs through Hunter McGilvery, who has 17 points in 9 games, with Ryan Wercholaz (13 points, 49 penalty minutes) adding some edge. If you want to support local junior hockey, this one has tension on both benches. Get out to the rink or catch it on SportsEngine Play.
