Game of the Night: Brantford Ice Cats vs. Norfolk Hericanes (U18B)

The Norfolk Hericanes U18B made the trip to Gretzky Sport Complex 2 in Brantford on Wednesday night and came home with a 5-2 win over the Brantford Ice Cats.

Norfolk found the net five times to the Ice Cats' two in this OWHA U18B matchup, a three-goal cushion and a solid road result for the visitors from Norfolk County.

Final score: Norfolk Hericanes 5, Brantford Ice Cats 2.

Around the Ice

  • Norfolk Knights U15AA came back to beat the Brampton 45s 6-4 at Port Dover. Brampton led 2-1 after one, then Norfolk scored three in the second to move ahead 4-2 and traded two apiece in the third to close it out.

  • Haldimand River Kings U11A opened with four goals in the first period and never looked back, rolling past Pelham 9-1 at Hagersville. Haldimand scored three more in the second and two in the third.

  • Haldimand River Kings U13B put up seven on Thorold in a 7-1 win at Hagersville, with two goals in the first, two in the second, and three in the third.

  • Norfolk Knights U18B refused to quit at Port Dover. Down 2-0 after two periods to the New Hamburg Huskies, Norfolk found two in the third to earn a 2-2 tie.

  • Haldimand River Kings U13A pulled even late at Hagersville, trailing Stoney Creek 2-1 after two before tying it in the third for a 2-2 draw.

Coming Up: Port Dover Sailors at Dundas Blues

Tonight at Market Street Arena (7:30 p.m.) is a big test for the Sailors. Dundas leads the Bloomfield Division with 18 points in 11 games, with 49 goals for and only 29 against, the second-best goals-against mark in the division. Port Dover is fifth at 5-5-1 with 11 points, level with Glanbrook, who have played one game fewer. The Blues are the team everyone is chasing, and the Sailors are the ones trying to climb.

The Sailors’ challenge is the goals-against column, 58 in 11 games, tied for the most in the division, and their 36 goals for is among the lowest. So tonight is a test of whether they can tighten up against the best team in the group. A win would close a seven-point gap in one night, and it would tell everyone the Sailors aren’t done.

The Sailors do have scoring to lean on. Trevor Nunn has 16 points in just 8 games (8 goals, 8 assists), D. Courrier has 7 goals in 8 games, and T. McHutchion has 10 assists. Dundas runs through Kael Andrew, who has 17 points in 11 games (8 goals, 9 assists), with K. DeJussel adding 13. Get to the rink early, because this one has a lot riding on it for the Sailors.
