Monday night put five minor hockey games on the board for hometown teams, and the best story came from Brant Sports (Gurney), where the Delhi-Norwich 59ers U18A and the Brant Battalion played to a 2-2 tie. Elsewhere, the Haldimand River Kings U16A rolled 5-1 at Vale, the U11Bs scored three in the third to tie Port Colborne, and the 59ers U16A ran into a big second half in New Hamburg.

Game of the Night: Brant Battalion vs. Delhi-Norwich 59ers (U18A)

The Brant Battalion got on the board first at Brant Sports (Gurney), scoring the only goal of the opening period to lead the Delhi-Norwich 59ers 1-0.

The 59ers answered in the second. One goal, and it was all square at 1-1 heading into the third.

The last 20 minutes brought one more goal for each side, and nobody could pull ahead. Neither team ever led by more than a goal, from the first period to the final horn. Two U18A clubs, two goals apiece, and a result that felt fair to both.

Final: Brant Battalion 2, Delhi-Norwich 59ers 2.

Around the Ice

  • Haldimand River Kings U16A were on top from the opening period and never looked back, beating Port Colborne 5-1 at Vale. Two goals in the first, one in the second, and two more in the third did the job.

  • Haldimand River Kings U11B staged a third-period rally at Vale. Down 3-0 after two periods to Port Colborne, they scored three times in the third to salvage a 3-3 tie.

  • Haldimand River Kings U13B ran into a three-goal second period from Port Colborne and dropped a 5-1 decision at Vale. The River Kings found their lone goal in the third.

  • Delhi-Norwich 59ers U16A struck first in New Hamburg and led 1-0 after one, but the Huskies scored three in the second and three more in the third for a 6-2 win at the Wilmot Complex. The 59ers added a goal in the third.

Coming Up: Dunnville Jr. Mudcats at Dundas Blues

Thursday night at Market Street Arena (7:30 p.m.), the Dunnville Jr. Mudcats go looking for a win against the team the whole Bloomfield Division is chasing. Dundas leads the division at 9-1-1 with 19 points and has won six straight, including a 9-2 win over the Port Dover Sailors last Thursday. Dunnville sits eighth at 3-5-1, but arrives with two straight wins, 9-2 at Streetsville on Oct. 9 and 8-3 over the Derbys at home on Oct. 16.

Here is why the standings undersell the Mudcats. They have played only 9 games, two fewer than Dundas, Hagersville and Streetsville, and they trail those last two by just one or two points. Their goals-against column is a quiet strength too: 32 allowed in 9 games, third-lowest in the division behind Dundas (27) and Niagara (28). The challenge is on the other end of the ice, where Dundas has scored 53 times.

It is also the first half of a busy road swing, with the Mudcats at Grimsby on Friday (7:30 p.m., Peach King Arena). Can't make the drive to Dundas? The league schedule lists the game with a Watch on SportsEngine option.
