Game of the Night: West Niagara vs. Haldimand River Kings (U15A)

The Haldimand River Kings U15A made the trip to Fleming and got on the board first. Haldimand scored once in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead, and West Niagara could not find an answer.

The second period was the difference. The River Kings scored twice in the middle frame to stretch the lead to 3-0, and the home side was still looking for its first goal.

The third period stayed quiet. Neither team scored, and Haldimand shut the door. By period, it read 1-2-0 for the River Kings and 0-0-0 for West Niagara.

It was a big night for the program. Three Haldimand River Kings teams won by shutout on Wednesday, one in Fleming and two in Hagersville.

Final: Haldimand River Kings 3, West Niagara 0.

Around the Ice

  • Port Dover Sailors ran into a fast-starting Glanbrook Rangers team at Glanbrook Arena and fell 9-4 in PJHL play. Glanbrook led 4-1 after the first and 7-3 after two, with Ryan Wercholaz notching a hat trick for the Rangers. Trevor Nunn scored twice for Port Dover, and Ty McHutchion and Kowen Bradley each added a goal.

  • Norfolk Knights U15AA rallied at Port Dover and earned a 3-3 tie with the Centre Wellington Fusion in TCMHL play. The Fusion led 2-1 after two periods, then Norfolk scored twice in the third to get the tie.

  • Norfolk Knights U18B traded punches with the New Hamburg Huskies in Port Dover and settled for a 4-4 tie. Both teams scored three in the first, each added one in the second, and the third period stayed scoreless.

  • Haldimand River Kings U13B blanked Glancaster 2-0 in Hagersville, with a goal in each of the second and third periods.

  • Haldimand River Kings U13A also posted a shutout in Hagersville, beating Pelham 3-0 with one goal in each period.

  • Haldimand River Kings U11A lost a tight one to Garden City 1-0 in Hagersville in NDHL play. Garden City scored in the first period and held on.

Coming Up: Port Dover Sailors at Grimsby Peach Kings

Nine straight losses is a heavy thing to carry into a rink, and the Port Dover Sailors carry it into Peach King Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Grimsby sits on the other end of the streak. The Peach Kings have won five in a row, sit third in the Bloomfield Division at 11-3-1 with 24 points, and have the most goals for in the division (83) with just 41 against.

The Sailors are 4-12-1 with 9 points, seventh in the division, and they have played 17 games, more than any other team in the Bloomfield. Wednesday's 9-4 loss at Glanbrook followed a 10-2 loss to Streetsville on Sunday, so the 109 goals against are the number to fix. Tightening up in their own end is where a turnaround starts.

Port Dover still has firepower. Trevor Nunn has 14 goals and 26 points in 15 games, and Dylan Courrier has 21 points in 15. Grimsby answers with Marcus Harris (27 points in 15 games) and Jordan Marconi (26 points in 15). Can't make the drive to Grimsby? The game is on SportsEngine Play.
