50 Teams, One Powerful Cause: Simcoe Warriors Tournament for Breast Cancer Set to Fill Talbot and Waterford
There are tournaments that bring teams together for a weekend of hockey.
And then there are tournaments that mean a little more.
This weekend, the Simcoe Warriors will welcome 50 teams from across Ontario for the Annual Simcoe Warriors Tournament for Breast Cancer, a four day event that will fill the rinks in Talbot and Waterford with hockey, community, and support for a cause that has touched far too many families.
For years, the event was known as the Marci Cook Memorial Tournament, held in memory of a longtime volunteer who passed away from breast cancer. After a decade of hard work, Marci’s family and friends have now stepped back from organizing the event, but the meaning behind it has not changed.
Tournament Director Vanessa Taylor said the new volunteer group wanted to carry that support forward.
“The Simcoe Warriors Tournament for Breast Cancer has started this year, but carries many of the same traditions it has in previous years with some new twists and some fun competitions,” Taylor said.

Keeping the event tied to breast cancer fundraising and awareness was never really up for debate.
“Keeping this fundraising tournament as a Breast Cancer Fundraiser and Awareness has been a staple in our association and families,” she said. “This has hit close to home for families within our association that I care to admit to. We want to continue to raise awareness and fundraise whatever possible to help our local communities and show them our support when they need it most.”
That purpose will be felt all weekend long.
The 2026 edition is the biggest the tournament has been in decades, with 50 teams attending from U9 through U18. Some are coming from nearby communities. Others are making the trip from much farther away, including Timmins.
For Taylor and the organizing committee, that kind of response says a lot about what this tournament has become.
“It means a great deal to all of us,” she said. “Seeing these teams reach out, even before teams are set, to hold a spot in the tournament shows how dedicated and well enjoyed this tournament has been.”
There are several returning teams that make it a point to come back year after year.
“We couldn’t be more thankful,” Taylor said. “They enjoy what we have to offer, as not all tournaments have the opportunities to give like we do. All thanks to sponsors, families and friends.”
And this is about much more than what happens on the ice.
Families coming through Talbot and Waterford can expect a full tournament atmosphere with plenty going on for players, parents, and fans. There will be vendors at both locations, DC Food Trucks on site, pizza parties for every team, and a thank you brunch on Saturday at Talbot Arena for all players and bench staff hosted by Gator BBQ.
There is also a competition that made a big impact last year and is returning again.
“We started a little competition last year for the team who showed the most Breast Cancer Support,” Taylor said. “Well, let’s just say that was a huge success and we’ve decided to do it again with each division and a winner at the end.”
The weekend will also feature opening ceremonies on Friday, March 20 at 9 a.m. at Talbot Arena, a moment Taylor says will set the tone for everything the tournament stands for.
“It will be quite the ceremony full of support, dedication and a few speeches.”
As with any event of this size, none of it happens without a long list of people working behind the scenes.
Taylor, now in her second year as Tournament Director, was quick to shine the light on the volunteers helping make it all happen.
“We have a great committee this year and we couldn’t be more proud and thankful,” she said.
She pointed to Tracy Wright as the scheduling guru and organizer, Maddie Louks as a longtime assistant who has been involved with previous tournaments for years, and a committee made up of one parent from each local Simcoe Warriors team from U9 to U18.
She also made sure to recognize the many others who step up.
“We want to thank the parents, friends and families along with the students who will be volunteering to play music, set up, take down, and run concession booth. Your efforts are appreciated. This is what helps an association grow.”
That line may be the best way to describe the event as a whole.
This tournament is not just about wins and losses. It is about what a hockey community can do when it rallies together. It is about support. It is about awareness. It is about creating memories for young players while standing behind families who need it most.
And for anyone in Simcoe or the surrounding area who has never stopped in to see it, Taylor has a pretty simple message.
“Our town is a big hockey community,” she said. “This tournament boasts so much for Breast Cancer, competition, new friendships and partnerships.”
It is also a chance for young kids thinking about playing hockey to see what the sport community can look like at its best.
“Supportive, fun, competitive, and life long relationships.”
That is what will be on display next weekend in Talbot and Waterford.
Fifty teams. One community. One cause that matters.
And if the response so far is any indication, this is going to be one of the biggest and most meaningful weekends on the local hockey calendar.
Come on out. They will see you at the rink.
